6 Ways to Beat Jet Lag and Enjoy Your Honeymoon

The wedding’s over, and you’re ready to enjoy some relaxing time with your sweetheart. But, guess what? If you’re traveling far enough, both of you might be struggling to not only stay awake but enjoy the special time together. Don’t worry! You can beat jet lag with a little pre-honeymoon prep and some savvy traveling tips.

1. Shift Your Sleep Schedule Before the Trip

With all the pre-wedding jitters, you might not be thinking about when you’re going to sleep. Take a deep breath and think about how you’d like to spend your time while on your honeymoon. If you don’t want to be passed out on the bed or awake staring out the window at 2 am, start adjusting your sleep schedule a few days in advance. Depending on where you’re going, that might mean waking up and going to bed an hour earlier than usual. For destinations with significant time differences, adjust your bedtime a half-hour or hour more each day until your honeymoon.

2. Change Your Meal Times Before the Trip

This one goes hand in hand with shifting your sleep schedule. When you eat your meals actually changes when your body begins to feel fatigued. Eating your meals an hour or two earlier than usual can help shift your body’s circadian rhythms, which control your sleep-wake cycle. This technique works best when you eat healthy, balanced meals.

3. Stay Hydrated

After #1, this one seems simple. Traveling tends to dry out the skin and body. Dehydration can leave you feeling tired and flat. You don’t want that for your wedding or honeymoon. Make an effort to carry a water bottle with you everywhere you go pre-honeymoon. Hydration might not prevent jet lag, but it certainly reduces its effects.

4. Sleep on the Plane (Train or Automobile if not driving!)

Sleep while you travel. This tactic works best for destinations with the opposite time zone as your home location. Though you may not get as much rest as you would normally, if you’re stepping off the plane first thing in the morning while everyone at home is heading to bed, you’ll be glad you got a little sleep. It will give you the energy you need to start adjusting to the local time.

5. Resist the Urge to Nap

As much as you might want to lay down for a short nap, you should resist the urge. Try to stay awake until your bedtime in the new time zone. If you start this on the first day, you’ll be surprised how quickly you’re able to adjust. You and your spouse can help to keep each other awake. When you start to feel drowsy, try taking a walk, enjoy the sights, or simply head outside for some sunshine, which can help adjust your sleep cycle.

6. Get a Little Help

There are lots of supplements available to help you stay awake or sleep, but something as simple as melatonin can help you sleep when it’s time. Caffeine temporarily blocks sleep-inducing hormones so it might help you for a short time but be aware that it can also cause dehydration. Remember #3? If you do grab a soda to stay awake, you should drink a glass of water too.

There’s so much to do before you get married. Planning, parties, wedding prep, and DIY projects suddenly explode your to-do list. You may find yourself sacrificing sleep time to take care of wedding-related tasks.

Sleep is critical to your mental and physical health and well being.  It also can affect the way you look.  You could end up looking less radiant at your wedding if you sacrifice sleep to stay up late working on wedding tasks.

Sleep Can Make You Look More Healthy and Attractive

In a Swedish sleep study, researching found a difference in observers’ perception of the health, attractiveness, and tiredness of photos of people who were sleep-deprived and the same people when they were well-rested. Photos of participants were taken after a normal night’s sleep and after sleep deprivation, and observers rated their photos.

Observers categorized the participants in a sleep-deprived state as:

• More tired

• Less healthy

• Less attractive

This study does suggest we can detect sleep-related body cues.  With adequate sleep, you can keep these facial cues from being detected in your wedding photos.  Remember, you and many other people will view your photos for years to come.

Premature Aging can Result With Sleep Deprivation

One night of sleep deprivation can make you look less attractive the next day, but making sleeping less a habit can affect your long-term attractiveness. Your sleep quality can impact your skin function and aging.

When you don’t get good quality sleep, your skin may show increased signs of aging. A clinical trial found that people who got less sleep had slower skin recovery from environmental stressors such as sun exposure.

How to Get the Sleep You Need to Look Your Best

Looking and feeling your best is critical on your wedding day and the events leading up to it. Follow these tips to get good sleep so you can be at your best.

• Plan ahead.

Start your wedding planning as early as possible and work ahead. Completing tasks long before your wedding day will lessen stress, anxiety, and last-minute details that can rob you of the sleep you need just before your wedding day.  Lack of sleep can leave you frazzled and looking less attractive than you would if you could get enough sleep. On the night before your wedding, don’t stay up late.  Put those finishing touches on your DIY projects with plenty of time to spare.

• Ask for help.

There are a lot of parts and pieces to a wedding.  In order to get those wedding tasks done early, reach out and ask for help from family and friends. Delegate tasks as much as possible. Sharing duties will cut down on your workload and may give you more time to sleep, and it can help family and friends feel more involved in your wedding. Also, the role of bridesmaids and maids of honor is to help the bride look her best of the most important day of her life. Let them help so you can get your sleep.

• Focus on getting your best quality sleep.

Healthy sleep habits are important to maintain. Maintain a regular sleep schedule and bedtime routine for consistency that will make it easier for you to fall asleep at night. Be careful to avoid caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, heavy meals, or intense exercise late at night, as they can interfere with sleep. Make your bedroom a comfortable, quiet, and calm place to sleep. Check mattress reviews to make sure that yours is appropriate for your sleeping style and temperature. Make sure you don’t bring wedding work to bed with you, such as doing craft projects, working on your laptop, or checking in on your mobile device. Just relax and go to sleep.

• Avoid late nights prior to your wedding day.

Rehearsal dinners are common the day before your wedding, but be careful not to let the party go too late.  You need enough sleep for the next day.  Try to schedule the start time in the early evening so you won’t feel like you have to stay late.
